WFTU Solidarity Statement with the General Strike in Portugal

The World Federation of Trade Unions, the militant voice of 110 million workers in 134 countries across the five continents, expresses its full solidarity with the General Strike of June 3rd, 2026 in Portugal, against the government's anti-worker "package" of labour reforms. These are the same reforms the government failed to implement last year due to the militant and relentless struggle of the Portuguese working class.

Now the government brings the proposal back, submitting the labour-reform package to the Assembly of the Republic. It is clear that this package would perpetuate low wages, legalise dismissals without just cause, expand precarious employment, deregulate and extend working hours, and undermine maternity and paternity rights, collective bargaining, freedom of association, and the right to strike. With such measures, the government aligns itself with the interests of major economic and financial groups.

These policies reflect the constant strategy of big capital in all countries, promoted by EU and bourgeois governments across Europe, sometimes under different names or excuses, but always with the same class objectives.

Workers must once again respond decisively, rejecting these measures in the streets and in their workplaces, just as they did last year through the December 11th strike and the massive demonstrations led by the CGTP-IN.

The WFTU salutes the militant stance of the working class in Portugal, choosing the path of resistance and dignity against the anti-Labour policies. We express our full and unconditional solidarity with the general strike and stand firmly beside CGTP-IN, the workers of Portugal and their just demands.

We reassure the working class of Portugal that they can rely on steadfast support and internationalist solidarity in their struggle for dignified living and working conditions and against exploitation.
