WATCH: The moment NorthStar crash off the foils as communication boils over

Fans can go behind-the-scenes of NorthStar in Portsmouth, as strained on board comms and boat handling errors led to the Canadian F50 crashing off the foils just meters from the finish line.

The moment is captured in the latest episode of Racing on the Edge, which puts the squad's team culture under the spotlight during the crucial mid-season events of Halifax and Portsmouth.

The team, which arrived in the UK under pressure to turn around a so-far lackluster season, was leading the second race of the day. But a strategic disagreement between driver Giles Scott and strategist Annie Haeger saw the team lose crucial ground to the Spanish chasing in second.

Explaining the situation, Haeger said the team's jibe put them coming up 'in the middle of the 'poles', the permanent maritime navigation markers in the middle of the Portsmouth racecourse. While Scott asked Haeger to steer 'above the poles', Haeger decided instead to go below them.

"That was the wrong call," she admitted. "I disagreed with the call - that's what it boils down to and that resulted in everybody not being on the same page of what we were doing and it resulted in us getting slow."

The result handed the advantage back to the Spanish team as both teams came up on the final turn to the finish line.

But the issues weren't over for the Canadian team. A request from Scott earlier in the race for grinder Tom Ramshaw to cut his mic meant there was confusion on board about how and when to execute the final jibe. The Canadian F50 fell off the foils and was passed by four boats just meters from the finish line, with the team ultimately finishing fifth.

The reaction of NorthStar CEO Phil Kennard was captured behind-the-scenes when he asked Los Gallos CEO Antonio Alquézar 'what the hell was that'?

The full fifth episode of Racing on the Edge 'Empathy' is now available to watch on YouTube.
