Kier “Junior” Spates Announced as Host of 2026 Sips for Sickle Cell Event

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Kier "Junior" Spates, an award-winning comedian, philanthropist, writer, podcaster, inspirational speaker, radio personality, and nationally recognized advocate for Sickle Cell Disease awareness, is set to host an event benefitting the Methodist Healthcare Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center.

Sips for Sickle Cell, which begins at 6:30 p.m. on September 22, 2026, will be held at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens and feature an evening of food, beverage and engaging comedy from Spates.

"Ever since I was diagnosed with sickle cell disease at age seven, I know how important it is to have help and resources in navigating this disease," Spates said.

"It's why I'm excited to partner with the Methodist Healthcare Foundation and their Sips for Sickle Cell event. I'll be there to talk about my journey, help raise funds for the Methodist Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center and encourage the community to support those impacted by sickle cell disease in the Mid-South. It's going to be an unforgettable event benefiting a great cause that's very near and dear to my heart," he said.

Spates serves as the Founder of Kier's Hope Foundation, a non-profit organization that aims to support individuals affected by sickle cell disease. Through his writing, comedy and work at his foundation, Spates has made it a life-long mission to raise awareness and serve as an advocate for awareness of this disease.

As someone who was diagnosed with sickle cell disease at age seven and told by doctors that he would not live past age 11, Spates has overcome many obstacles and looks forward to sharing his story at the event.

Spates, who can be heard weekdays on the nationally syndicated Steve Harvey Morning Show, also hosts his own radio program on 107.5 FM in Atlanta. He is an accomplished writer with a Daytime Emmy nomination and writing credits in radio, television and film.

The annual fundraiser, now in its fifth year, looks to serve and benefit one of the largest populations of adult sickle cell disease patients in the country. For these patients, daily life is often interrupted by pain that can last weeks - threatening their family life, career, education and social life.

The Methodist Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center offers a number of services for patients, including quick access to infusion care services, assistance in transitioning from pediatric care to adult care, social workers and incredible expertise from healthcare providers.
