State Representative Brian Stewart (R-Ashville) announced that the Ohio House of Representatives yesterday passed House Bill 37, legislation that honors the life, career and legacy of longtime Pickaway County Sheriff's Deputy Rex Emrick, who died in the line of duty on January 26th, 2021.
House Bill 37, sponsored by Rep. Stewart, designates a portion of State Route 56, between S.R. 316 and the Madison County line, in Pickaway County as the "Detective Rex Emrick Memorial Highway."
"It's important to acknowledge sacrifices made by detective Rex Emrick and other law-enforcement officers who kept answering the call, and the families and friends they left behind," said Rep. Stewart. "Detective Rex Emrick was truly the best of the best and we were honored in Pickaway County to have had such an incredible example of what service truly means in our community. I am grateful for the opportunity to honor him with this bill."
Detective Emrick began his law enforcement career with the Mount Sterling Police Department in April 1974. Beginning in 1976 and until his passing on January 26, 2021, he served at the Pickaway County Sheriff's Office as a deputy sheriff and a detective. In his time on the force, he received multiple distinguishing awards such as the Buckeye State Sheriff's Association Commendation Award, the Law Enforcement Excellence Award by the Ohio Department of Public Safety, as well as the 2001 VFW Post Number 331 Circleville Officer of the Year.
The bill now heads to the Ohio Senate for further consideration.
