'Illegalized: Undocumented Youth Movements,' a book talk with UNM alum Dr. Rafael Martínez

A series of events featuring alum Dr. Rafael Martínez is scheduled for Oct. 28, culminating with a book talk from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Student Union Building, Ballroom C.

Martínez and will discuss his book "Illegalized: Undocumented Youth Movements" and celebrate his accomplishments. This book tells the story of undocumented youth movements in the United States. Martínez will also share insights about his journey from graduate school to becoming a faculty member.

The book talk will also feature a presentation by Jasmine Hernandez, a Ph.D. student in Evolutionary Anthropology. A light lunch will be provided and the first students to arrive will receive a free copy of his book.

Before the book talk, Martínez will host a workshop and a student meet and greet. The workshop, titled (Un)Documenting Illegalized Imaginaries: A Methodology Workshop with Dr. Rafael Martínez, is scheduled for 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Frank Waters Room in Zimmerman Library.

This workshop utilizes the methodology of (un)documenting to consider the following questions: How can the undocumented be documented? What are the ethical, political, and intellectual repercussions in doing so? How can places such as the university, libraries, classrooms, and research endeavors function as sites of support for undocumented activists, students, and the community?

This workshop is geared toward students, community members, and community-centered intellectuals. It is also open to oral historians, archivists, and social movement scholars who aim to propel creative and alternative methodologies grounded in creating support networks.

Following the workshop, Martínez will host a Student Meet and Greet from 12 to 1:30 p.m. at El Centro de la Raza.
