In response to former Labor Secretary Alexis Herman's passing, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:
"I'm deeply saddened by the passing of Secretary Alexis Herman, a trailblazer who made history as the first Black Secretary of Labor under President Clinton. From leading the White House Office of Public Engagement to serving as Assistant to the President, Alexis left an indelible mark as a public servant and beloved colleague.
"On top of her work with numerous administrations, she also faithfully served her Party, and those contributions can't be overstated. She spent years working with the DNC and Democratic candidates, serving as Senior Advisor and Chief of Staff to former Chair Ron Brown. Following the 2004 presidential election loss, she even stepped up to serve as co-chair of the DNC's Rules and Bylaws Committee, helping to modernize the Democratic Party and opening the door for the historic presidency of Barack Obama.
"Throughout her extraordinary career, she paved the way for generations to follow. Her work lifted families after Hurricane Katrina and the Haiti earthquake, strengthened presidential campaigns, and most importantly, always centered working-class people.
"She was a proud daughter of Mobile, Alabama, who never failed to mentor and uplift others. Our Party and our country are stronger because of Alexis Herman. She will be deeply missed."
