Difficult swan song race for Acura GTP program

October 4, 2026 - BRASELTON, GA
  • Acura closes its IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GTP chapter with sixth and 10th place finishes
  • #93 claims second in the IMSA team championship, Acura takes P3 in the manufacturer title fight
  • 10 years of Acura excellence in IMSA highlighted by championships and marquee race wins

Acura has officially closed this chapter of their IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship after a decade of racing in both GT and prototype classes.

The #60 Acura ARX-06 started from pole and was in podium contention before a last-lap pit stop for a splash of fuel relegated the team to sixth in the 2026 edition of Petit Le Mans with Tom Blomqvist, Colin Braun and Scott Dixon.

Meanwhile, the #93 of Renger van der Zande, Nick Yelloly and Alex Palou started second and finished 10th after multiple incidents through the middle of the race eventually forced them to retire with just under three hours remaining.

Despite the difficult race, the #93 Acura Meyer Shank Racing with Curb Agajanian team locked up second in the team championship, while Acura took P3 in the manufacturer title fight and Nick Yelloly and Renger van der Zande third in the drivers' championship.

Acura's 2026 effort was highlighted by a win at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach for the #93 car, the brand's first victory at the event since Acura took over title sponsorship.

Acura's current tenure in IMSA began with the Acura NSX GT3 car and Meyer Shank Racing in 2017. That car would go on to claim the 2019 manufacturer, driver and team titles, and repeat for driver and team championships in 2020.

Acura added the ARX-05 DPi car to the field in 2018. That car would earn 23 pole positions and 17 victories, as well as a sweep of all three championships in 2019, 2020 and 2022.

The Acura ARX-06 ushered in the brand new GTP era in 2023 with a victory at the Rolex 24 at Daytona, the third win in a row in that twice-round-the-clock endurance classic for Acura. The car would go on to win a total of eight times in its three years of competition.

All-in-all, Acura's decade of IMSA competition saw the manufacturer earn 33 victories and 45 pole positions.

Quotes
Mike Shank (Team owner, Acura Meyer Shank Racing with Curb Agajanian): "Today, specifically, I think we showed just how tenacious this team has always been, even right down to the end with the #60 Acura fighting for a podium after a really tough race. The two cars dominated at the start, and then we just kind of spiraled after some things went wrong, and it was really hard to get track position back. But that's just one example of that tenacity over an incredible 10 years.

"My life is different because of it, personally and professionally, and I'm eternally grateful for all the folks at Acura and HRC. They put faith in us and we accomplished a lot together-with things in the record books that won't ever change. So, it's kind of a sad day. I wish we would've had the podium finish, but it just didn't work out. More than anything, I'm just proud and very humbled by the amount of effort that everybody puts in every weekend, and now we look forward to the future in IndyCar."

Kelvin Fu (President, HRC US): "Petit started great, didn't end the way we wanted. Locking out the front row for our fifth pole of the season and second front-row lockout was a great accomplishment and shows the speed of the cars, team, and drivers. It was a tough race where the team overcame numerous challenges and was one lap from a podium...but that's racing.

"This program has achieved so much since 2023 with poles, wins, and establishing Acura and HRC as a presence in electrified prototype sportscar racing. Over the past two years, HRC partnered with MSR to further deepen our associates' involvement in running car #93.

"I want to thank everyone who contributed to this program, especially the people at MSR, WTR, and HRC. Their commitment, professionalism, and passion were the foundation of this program's success. While this chapter of Acura racing comes to a close, the people, technology, and relationships developed will be an important part of our racing future."
