Susannah Glickman Awarded Fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Study

Stony Brook University Assistant Professor Susannah Glickman has been awarded a fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS). Glickman will complete her fellowship in the School of Social Science between 2026-2027.

This prestigious membership allows for focused research and the free and open exchange of ideas among an international community of scholars at one of the foremost centers for intellectual inquiry.

"The IAS fellowship will give both the time and intellectual community to fully develop my book in the ambitious directions I want it to go," said Glickman, a member of the Department of History faculty. "It also gives me the freedom to explore ideas both in a very natural direction for my work via the theme seminar on global political economy and those far but resonant or generative via the community and general seminar. I am excited for an intellectually productive year that helps me develop my scholarship in fresh and unexpected directions."

Glickman is a historian who works on the history of science and political economy of the military-scientific-industrial-complex. She has a background in anthropology and mathematics. During her fellowship, Glickman will be writing her book project about the rise and fall of the post-Cold War state through the lens of high-tech and defense industries.

"The Department of History is very proud, but not very surprised, that the Institute for Advanced Study recognized the quality and importance of Susannah's work," said Sara Lipton, professor and department chair. "Her analysis of the intersections between technology, industry, labor, and military policy illuminate the most pressing questions and prominent currents of our day."

Glickman holds a PhD from Columbia University and has been at Stony Brook since Fall 2023.

Visiting scholars are selected through a highly competitive process for their bold ideas, innovative methods, and deep research questions by the permanent faculty, each of whom are preeminent leaders in their fields. Past IAS Faculty include Albert Einstein, Erwin Panofsky, John von Neumann, Hetty Goldman, George Kennan and J. Robert Oppenheimer.
