Several newly released national rankings recognize the University of South Florida as one of America's best universities, citing its exceptional combination of academic excellence, affordability and return on investment that helps students graduate with less debt and launch successful careers.
Money awarded USF 4.5 out of 5 stars in its 2026 Best Colleges rankings, tying for the highest rating among Florida's public universities. The ranking is designed to help families identify universities that provide the greatest value based on affordability and outcomes. According to Money, "The University of South Florida is a relatively young school; it was founded in 1956. But in the seven decades since, it has established itself as a top-performing university. It's consistently ranked among the best public universities in the country, and it's recognized for its science, health and medical programs.
Money reviewed data from more than 700 four-year colleges based on 25 metrics, including graduation rates, affordability, financial aid, student debt and alumni salaries. USF's in-state tuition is nearly half the cost of the national average and 76% of USF students graduate without debt.
SmartAsset ranked USF No. 11 among public universities nationally for value - recognizing institutions that combine academic quality with affordability and strong long-term financial outcomes for graduates.
Niche also placed USF among the nation's leading public universities, ranking it No. 24 among public universities while awarding the institution an A+ overall grade based on factors such as academics, top professors, student life, campus experience and athletics. Niche rankings are based on key statistics from the U.S. Department of Education and consumer reviews.
