NEW YORK CITY-Today, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Representative Gregory W. Meeks (D-NY), Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, met with Syrian President al-Sharaa on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly High Level Week.

Senator Shaheen emphasized the need for Congress to pass her bipartisan legislation that would lift the Assad-era Caesar Act sanctions against Syria. Senator Shaheen underscored the importance of protecting human rights, advancing political reforms and deepening Syria's engagement with the international community to prevent malign actors like Iran and Russia from exploiting instability. She also stressed that meaningful participation from Syria's diverse ethnic and religious communities is critical to ensuring lasting stability. The Senator expressed that the United States stands ready to support that vision to help build a Syria that is prosperous, peaceful and resilient.
