ALBANY, N.Y. - Consumer Brands released the following statement from John Hewitt, senior vice president of state affairs, in response to ongoing amendments to New York S. 1464-A:
"While we appreciate the intent of S. 1464-A bill authors, their amendments are still just an anti-packaging tax on consumers that will drive up costs and do little to improve recycling rates. Independent studies show this bill would drive up grocery costs by $700 a year for families of four. At a time when New Yorkers are already feeling the strain of higher prices, policymakers should focus on solutions that reduce waste without adding unnecessary costs at the checkout line. There is a better path forward, one that prioritizes modernizing recycling systems and drives innovation. Consumer Brands remains committed to investing in recycling infrastructure and welcomes continued dialogue on a practical, effective approach that reduces waste without burdening consumers."
