LOS ANGELES - Mayor Bass' Shine LA movement brought together community members in the Sepulveda Basin, Sylmar, South L.A., Boyle Heights and at LAFD Fire Station 77 for a day of action, service and emergency preparedness. Bringing together hundreds of volunteers each month, Shine LA promotes the strength, pride and resilience of every neighborhood in Los Angeles. B-roll available here.
"Through Shine LA we are creating new opportunities for residents to engage with their communities and neighbors," said Mayor Bass. "This is more than volunteer engagement - this is about empowering Angelenos to take pride in their city and show what's possible when we all come together."
Shine LA activations took place in the Sepulveda Basin, Sylmar, a San Fernando Valley Fire Station, South LA and Mariachi Plaza. Activities and resources included habitat restoration, loose-litter pickup, distribution of free emergency preparedness resources and more.
"SoCalGas is excited to roll up our sleeves alongside Mayor Bass and Friends of the LA River at the Shine LA volunteer event," said Andy Carrasco, Vice President of Communications and Regional Stakeholder Engagement at SoCalGas. "Restoring habitats in the Sepulveda Basin is more than a dedication to environmental stewardship-it's a call to action. Together, we're transforming open spaces in Los Angeles, strengthening our communities, and driving sustainability forward for future generations."
"We in Sylmar are pleased and excited to have Shine LA in Sylmar. Shine LA is a fantastic initiative from our Mayor Karen Bass. This initiative helps to foster a community day of service bringing beautification projects, civic pride, and overall unity within the community. We hosted a resource fair at the Sylmar Neighborhood Council office connecting service providers directly to our community members," said Kurt Cabrera-Miller, Sylmar NC President. "We have fantastic partners like LA City Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez and of course Sylmar Graffiti Busters who have been helping to keep Sylmar clean, safe and beautiful for over 35 years. Any time we can come together with pride and togetherness as Sylmarians and Angelenos in times of celebration it's a win-win for our community and our city."
Mayor Bass attended Shine LA activations, helping to distribute hundreds of resilient safes to east San Fernando families with the LAFD, Boys and Girls Club of San Fernando Valley, Sentry Safe and Master Lock. She also joined Assemblymember Mark Gonzalez, Weingart East LA YMCA and Little Tokyo Service Center to serve hot meals and distribute more than 1,000 turkeys to Angelenos. Despite fear caused by reckless immigration raids in communities like Boyle Heights, the event represented the purpose of Shine LA to bring neighbors together to one another, creating stronger communities that represent the resiliency of Los Angeles.
Holding Shine LA in the Sepulveda Basin, builds upon Mayor Bass' continued efforts to address longstanding public safety concerns in the Basin while also preparing the area to host games for the 2028 Olympics and Paralympics. Under the Mayor's direction, efforts have been made to conduct homeless outreach, the clearing of encampments and managing trees, brush and other vegetation to reduce fire risks. The Mayor's Office has also secured funding to make investments in the cleanliness and safety of the Sepulveda Basin.
Shine LA is held every fourth Saturday of the month, with activations occurring all over Los Angeles. Angelenos can go to mayor.lacity.gov/ShineLAto be notified of the next Shine LA or to partner with the Mayor's Office to sponsor Shine LA in their neighborhoods.
