OGH Celebrates Reopening of Mildred Milliman Radiation Medicine Center

OLEAN, NY - Olean General Hospital (OGH), a Kaleida Health facility, welcomed community members, donors, caregivers and supporters to celebrate the reopening of the Mildred Milliman Radiation Medicine Center on Tuesday, June 30, marking a major milestone for local cancer care and a renewed investment in the future of patients across the region.

The special event gave guests an inside look at the center's transformation, including guided tours of the updated facility, a first-hand view of the new state-of-the-art Varian TrueBeam 4.1 linear accelerator (LINAC) and the many patient-centered enhancements designed to make cancer treatment more comfortable and accessible close to home.

The reopening represents the completion of a $4.1 million renovation and equipment upgrade, made possible through the generous philanthropic support of the Olean community. In addition to advanced technology, the center has been refreshed throughout with new flooring, updated lighting, a renovated nurse's station, improved cabinetry, private patient changing areas and thoughtful design elements aimed at easing the treatment experience for patients and families.

"Today is about more than reopening a space," said Bradley J. Chapman, president, OGH. "It is about reaffirming our commitment to the patients and families across our region who rely on access to high-quality cancer care close to home."

During the event, attendees toured the center and saw firsthand how every detail of the renovation was designed with the patient experience in mind as well as a huge spotlight on the new LINAC and its unparalleled precision, speed and versatility.

"This machine is equipped with advanced capabilities that allows our radiation team to target cancerous cells while minimizing radiation exposure to the surrounding healthy tissues," said Roberta Truman, manager and lead radiation therapist, OGH. "The new linear accelerator can deliver higher doses at great speed, it's precision is measured in increments of less than one millimeter, it has advanced image guidance techniques and has built patient safety features that optimize patient comfort."

One of the most meaningful highlights of the celebration was the recognition of Robes for Comfort, a heartfelt initiative created by former patient Eileen "Birdie" Skrobacz. Inspired by her own experience receiving radiation therapy at the Mildred Milliman Radiation Medicine Center, the program provides soft robes for patients to wear during treatment. It's a simple but powerful gesture that helps promote comfort, privacy and confidence during a vulnerable time.

Birdie's story served as a moving reminder that compassionate cancer care extends beyond treatment itself. It includes the personal touches that help patients feel seen, respected and supported throughout their journey.

"Robes for Comfort is such a beautiful example of what this center represents," added Truman. "It reflects the compassion that has always defined cancer care here and the way our community members come together to lift one another up."

Since 2009, the Mildred Milliman Radiation Medicine Center has played a vital role in helping patients receive life-changing cancer treatment without the burden of traveling far from home. As the first joint venture between OGH and Bradford Regional Medical Center (BRMC), prior to forming Upper Allegheny Health System, the center was established to provide regional access to high-quality radiation therapy. For many patients, access to local radiation therapy means less time on the road, fewer disruptions to daily life and the ability to stay close to family, work and the support systems that matter most during treatment.

Chapman added, "We are fortunate to have a team of individuals who live here, work here and care immensely for the people in our community. They are not just healthcare professionals - they are your neighbors, friends, family members and trusted caregivers. They understand the people they serve because they are part of this region."

That impact is expected to grow even stronger in the years ahead. With the reopening of the center and the addition of advanced radiation technology, Olean General Hospital is strengthening its ability to provide precise, high-quality treatment for patients in the Southern Tier and the region while continuing to build a future of cancer care rooted in innovation, comfort, improve access and focused on community.

Rural healthcare providers face unique challenges, from rising costs and workforce shortages to maintaining access to advanced technology and specialized services. Philanthropy plays a vital role in overcoming those barriers, allowing hospitals like Olean General Hospital to invest in innovative equipment and patient-centered improvements that might not otherwise be possible. When communities invest in their local healthcare, they strengthen its ability to grow, expand services and ensure high-quality care remains close to home for generations to come.

"Every philanthropic gift is an investment in the health of our community," said Steve Jackson, president, Olean General Hospital Foundation. "The future of rural healthcare will not be built by hospitals alone. It will be built through partnership, philanthropy and communities that know perfection is not the goal, progress is."

Earlier this year, cancer care services at OGH including medical oncology and radiation oncology, joined Kaleida Health Cancer Care, the second-largest cancer care provider in Western New York. Kaleida Health Cancer Care provides patients with access to a full continuum of oncology care, from preventative screenings to testing, treatment, emergency and critical care if needed. Through this partnership, patients are able to receive complete wrap-around care throughout their entire cancer care journey, strengthening cancer care services right here at home.

As the center begins this next chapter, the vision remains clear which is to ensure that anyone facing a cancer diagnosis has access to advanced treatment and compassionate care, close to home.
