Deceased pedestrian identified from fatal crash at East Espanola Street and North Cascade Avenue

On January 2, 2026, at approximately 5:47 p.m., the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) was notified of a vehicle versus pedestrian crash near the intersection of East Espanola Street and North Cascade Avenue.

Emergency personnel arrived on scene and located the pedestrian, who was deceased. The driver of the vehicle involved remained on scene and cooperated with emergency responders.

Due to the nature of the crash, the CSPD Major Crash Team responded and assumed responsibility for the investigation. The initial investigation indicates the vehicle was traveling northbound on North Cascade Avenue, approaching East Espanola Street, which is a single-lane roadway. The pedestrian was crossing North Cascade Avenue near East Espanola Street when the collision occurred. At this time, impairment is not suspected, and speed does not appear to be a contributing factor.

On January 3, 2026, the El Paso County Coroner's Office conducted an autopsy on the deceased pedestrian and identified them as 76-year-old Alan Krause.

This was the first traffic fatality in Colorado Springs this year. At this time last year, there were zero traffic fatalities in Colorado Springs. In the past 365 days, there have been 54 traffic fatalities.
