ACT Completes Testing and Validation of 1 MW Two-Phase Coolant Distribution Unit

ACT Completes Testing and Validation of 1 MW Two-Phase Coolant Distribution Unit

Milestone advances two-phase direct-to-chip liquid cooling for high-density ai and hpc infrastructure

LANCASTER, Pa.- November 3, 2026 - Advanced Cooling Technologies, Inc. (ACT), a leading provider of advanced thermal management solutions, today announced the completion of system-level testing and validation of its 1 MW two-phase coolant distribution unit (CDU), marking a significant milestone in the advancement of direct-to-chip liquid cooling in artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure.

Designed for increasingly demanding AI workloads, ACT's 1 MW two-phase CDU is ideal for supporting rack densities beyond 200 kW. This unit integrates all the necessary pumping, heat exchange and system controls to support a closed-loop refrigerant-based cooling system. Testing evaluated performance, energy efficiency, control response and stability across varying thermal loads, chilled water inlet temperatures, external pressure drops and target refrigerant temperatures.

ACT's 1 MW two-phase coolant distribution unit successfully demonstrated more than 1 MW of cooling capacity during system-level testing.

Testing demonstrated more than 1 MW of total cooling capacity, with chilled water return temperatures within 5 °C of the refrigerant condensing temperature. The CDU also successfully managed a dynamic load profile ranging from 180 kW to 1,200 kW. Across the operating conditions evaluated, the system demonstrated stable performance and energy-efficient operation.

"Demonstrating a two-phase CDU capable of supporting data center cooling loads at the megawatt scale is a major milestone," said Devin Pellicone, Director of Data Center Solutions at ACT. "We believe we're among the first to validate a complete two-phase cooling system at this scale. It's an important step for ACT and for the industry looking for confidence that this technology can support the demands of AI infrastructure today and into the future."

Unlike conventional single-phase cooling, two-phase technology uses the coolant's phase change to absorb and transport heat, offering the potential to manage higher heat fluxes with lower coolant flow requirements. ACT's validation examined how the integrated system performs under changing thermal demands, providing insight into operating limits and system reliability.

"Testing at megawatt scale is more than evaluating how well individual components work," said Matt Keller, Principal Engineer at ACT. "We need to understand how the components perform together, how the system responds to changing loads and where the limits of operation may lie. We designed and tested this CDU with real world applications in mind, considering serviceability and functionality from the customer's perspective. That's what gives us the confidence to move this technology beyond the lab."

As real-world requirements for megawatt-scale two-phase cooling continue to evolve, ACT's work contributes practical engineering insight into the performance and integration of these systems. This milestone builds on ACT's more than 20 years of thermal engineering expertise and its continued investment in advanced compute cooling, including a 50,000-square-foot cold plate manufacturing expansion in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, supporting both single-phase and two-phase cooling technologies.

ACT Engineers to Discuss Megawatt-Scale Validation During DCD Cooling Week

On November 9 at 9 a.m. ET, ACT's Devin Pellicone and Matt Keller will join DatacenterDynamics (DCD) for Beyond the Megawatt: Validating Liquid Cooling at Scale, the opening broadcast of DCD Cooling Week 2026. The discussion will explore the engineering challenges of validating a complete 1 MW two-phase cooling system, including system performance under changing loads and the lessons learned through testing. Register for the broadcast.
