Balldale Quarry crushing program - Paving the way for improved roads

Published on 08 July 2025

Federation Council has commenced its annual crushing program at the Balldale Quarry, a crucial step in preparing for the upcoming yearly program of gravel resheeting and maintenance grading across the region. This strategic initiative ensures a reliable and cost-effective supply of essential materials for Council's vital infrastructure works.

Federation Council operates several quarries throughout the region, primarily to provide key materials like gravel, sand, and stone for its extensive maintenance and construction projects. These quarries are located on Council-owned land or private land through mutual agreements with landowners.

Federation Council Mayor, Cr Cheryl Cook highlighted the significant benefits of this approach for the community.

"Operating our own quarry, like the one in Balldale, is a game-changer for our road networks," said Mayor Cook.
"It provides us with a reliable and cost-effective source of essential construction materials. This ensures we can keep project costs down, leading to improved road maintenance and more efficient construction projects that benefit our entire community."

Mayor Cook emphasised the financial and operational advantages.
"By sourcing our own materials, we bypass the expense of purchasing from external suppliers, which generates significant savings, especially on large-scale projects," she said.
"Furthermore, having our own quarry ensures a consistent and readily available supply of materials, helping us avoid delays caused by external factors or supply chain disruptions."

Federation Council is committed to responsible quarry operations, adhering to all environmental regulations and developing comprehensive management plans for pollution control and rehabilitation. In some cases, these sites can even be redeveloped for community benefit, such as bushland conservation.

The gravel resheeting and maintenance grading program is set to begin in the coming months, utilising the materials produced from the Balldale Quarry.
