UIW Jalen Walthall Goes Viral for Celebratory Touchdown Move

Last Saturday's homecoming football game was a thrilling display of skill and excitement, with the Cardinals emerging victorious over Houston Christian University. However, it wasn't just the score that had fans cheering. One Cardinal player's unforgettable headstand touchdown celebration instantly went viral, turning him into an overnight internet and television sensation.

Jalen Walthall commemorated a 50-yard touchdown during the game's third quarter with a move he says was inspired by a similar move seen in the film Stomp the Yard (2007). Upon landing in the endzone, Walthall effortlessly launched himself into a perfect headstand, helmet and all.

The celebration may have earned the team a penalty flag, but it also went on to capture national attention.

Walthall's celebratory headstand quickly went viral across social media, inspiring others to attempt his "touchdown celly", including National Football League (NFL) players, Drake London of the Atlanta Falcons and Amon-Ra St. Brown of the Detroit Lions. St. Brown said he was disappointed that London, his former teammate, had recreated the move first, but was still determined to attempt the same move if he scored.

Walthall was informed by friends about the NFL players' recreation of his viral headstand. He found it exciting and "cool" to see professional football players imitating his move.

He has since been interviewed by a variety of news outlets, including KSAT, Kens5, the San Antonio Express-News, the Washington Post and ESPN SportsCenter. Each conversation gave him the opportunity to share his perspective and reflect on the moment that unexpectedly started it all, including the support of his coaches and team. When asked on ESPN if he'd found himself in trouble for the penalty flag received after his celebration, he laughed and said, "My coach told me, 'great play.' I've been blessed with a great couching staff."

Walthall has also received appreciation from inside the Nest. Many of UIW's community members, from students to staff saw his viral move and expressed the joy that it's brought them.

"Not only a trendsetter, but such a respectful young man!" commented one user on UIW's Instagram. "Way to go Cards!"

On Thursday, Nov. 7, Walthall participated in a pop-up photo and autograph opportunity on UIW's Broadway campus, allowing the Cardinal community to celebrate their fellow student who's suddenly grown to fame. Even UIW President, Dr. Thomas Evans, came out to visit with him.

The move has since been referred to as "The Walt." Walthall says it is possible for the move to return, but that he may have other ideas for future on-field victories.

"It's not going to be something I do every time I score, but I'm going to keep it in the bag," Walthall shared. "Stay tuned. I might have something for y'all."

Come support Walthall and the rest of the Cardinal football players as they face Lamar University on Saturday, Nov. 9 at the Gayle & Tom Benson Stadium.
