Independence Day Event Honors New Brunswick’s Historic 1776 Declaration Reading

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (July 3, 2026) - Christ Church will host a community celebration to honor the 250th anniversary of the United States tomorrow, July 4, starting at 10 a.m. at 5 Paterson St.

The location holds deep historical significance; on July 9, 1776, local citizens gathered nearby to hear Col. John Neilson deliver the nation's third public reading of the newly signed document from atop a table outside the adjacent White Hall Tavern.

Today, that moment is marked by two neighboring monuments: the First Readings Plaque on the Christ Church tower base and the Col. Neilson Statue at nearby Monument Square Park.

The upcoming commemoration will bring that history to life with a live reenactment of Neilson's public reading. Blending local heritage with community engagement, the day's programming also features presentations from special guest speakers, a dedicated organ concert, an on-site historical tour, a reception, and a book sale.
