The temporary halt in federal funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), known in California as CalFresh, is creating challenges for many people in the region, including some of our residents. Wondering how to access food, or how you can help?
There are three food distribution centers in Rancho Cordova. If you or someone you know needs food assistance, you do not need to meet any specific qualifications to receive food from a local food bank or food locker. These community resources are here to ensure that no one goes without food during this time.
1. The Rancho Cordova Food Locker
      Location: Cordova Neighborhood Church
      10600 Coloma Road
Food Distribution: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM

2. The People's Pantry
Location: United Methodist Church
2101 Zinfandel Drive
Food Distribution: Tuesdays, 9 AM
3. The Salvation Army Rancho Cordova Community Hub
Location: 10370 Old Placerville Road
Food Distribution: 1st Wednesday of the month, 10 AM - 2 PM
Right now, monetary donations are the most effective way to support food assistance efforts. Local food banks have tremendous purchasing power that allows them to stretch every dollar much further than individual shoppers can. For example, while $10 might buy a few cans of food at the store, food banks can purchase an entire case of food for that same amount. You can donate directly to the Rancho Cordova Food Locker.
If you prefer to donate food items, Rancho Cordova residents are encouraged to take donations directly to the Rancho Cordova Food Locker. Also, there is an Atlas Holiday Protein Food Drive at Cordova Neighborhood Church on Saturday, November 8, from 10 AM - 1 PM.
Together, Rancho Cordova can ensure that no neighbor faces hunger alone.
Did you know that for every one meal food banks provide, CalFresh normally provides nine? The temporary loss of SNAP benefits may increase demand at the food locker and other local food distribution centers. Please be patient and kind if you encounter increased traffic or longer lines in areas near these centers.
It's also important to remember that well over half of CalFresh recipients are working families, seniors, and individuals you might not realize are facing food insecurity. Empathy and understanding can go a long way.
