Brown community marks 25 years of remembering those lost on 9/11

Clements and James Perry, head coach of Brown's football team, read the names of the six Brown graduates who lost their lives: Donald F. Greene, Class of 1971; Charles Margiotta, Class of 1979; David Laychak, Class of 1983; Joanne F. Weil, Class of 1984; Raymond Rocha, Class of 1995; and Paul Sloan, Class of 1997.

Laychak, Margiotta, Rocha and Sloan played varsity football at Brown during their time as undergraduates, prompting many current members of Brown's football team to attend the event. During the ceremony, a Brown football helmet was placed at the memorial marker alongside roses and a wreath.

Rev. Delphain Demosthenes, associate University chaplain for the Protestant community, led prayers and offered remarks.

"We choose to remember because we understand that what happened on that day is too important to allow it to simply fade into history," Demosthenes said. "It has become part of our collective memory and our national consciousness. Today, even though it's 25 years later, it feels like yesterday."

In addition to the ceremony, moments of silence to mark the 25^th anniversary of 9/11 were held on Friday at Brown's field hockey and men's soccer games. A Brown Alumni Magazine tribute published after the attacks shared the full stories of each of the six Brown graduates killed.
