Salford professor discusses AI concerns on 'This Is MediaCity' podcast

Categories:School of Science, Engineering and Environment

Professor Andy Miah, Chair of Science Communication and Future Media, appeared on 'This Is MediaCity' podcast last week to speak about Artificial Intelligence.

Hosted by Stephen Chapman, the podcast is co-produced by Salford graduates and features MediaCity's own, including rising stars and cutting-edge creatives.

The pair discussed how artificial intelligence is reshaping education, business and the media, and how society is falling behind when it comes to digital literacy.

Prof Andy described the use of AI-generated materials as an 'assault on reality' and talks about how the rise of AI-generated content is creating new ethical challenges.

He believes that universities must begin to create environments that embrace emerging technologies like AI and VR but should also consider that people are not as educated as they should be on the several challenges that AI poses.

"We have failed to provide digital literacy across the education spectrum from primary all the way up to university," he said. "The best thing you can do to protect your future in your role is to understand the technology and keep that agility in what you do."

The conversation touches on the impact of AI across industry and major organisations which are already exploring how they can use AI effectively in their work.

The full podcast with Prof Andy Miah was released last Friday and is available to watch on 'This Is MediaCity'.
