CTDOT Kicks Off First Statewide Bus Shelter Installations in Hamden

10/22/2025

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) today announced the state's first-ever installation of bus shelters under the Bus Stop Enhancement Program (BSEP), beginning with five new shelters in Hamden.

The Bus Stop Enhancement Program is a new $20 million initiative to upgrade high-ridership bus stops across Connecticut with modern amenities including shelters, benches, solar lighting, and real-time information displays. In total, 600 bus shelters will be installed by 2029.

Informed by rider feedback, this program directly addresses the most requested improvements, including shelter, seating, and improvedaccess to real-time information.

"We're transforming bus stops across Connecticut into more accessible, welcoming, and rider-friendly spaces because everyone deserves the best experience possible when using public transit," said CTDOT Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto. "These new shelters are a vital investment in dignity, comfort, and safety for the tens of thousands of people who rely on our bus system every day."

CTDOT has evaluated every bus stop in the state by ridership to guide where improvements are made, ensuring upgrades are prioritized at the busiest and most visible locations. All shelters and amenities are designed to meet ADA standards, incorporate universal design principles, and align with CTDOT'sComplete Streets Policy.

Municipalities interested in enhancements can apply through CTDOT's Bus Stop Enhancement Application process.
