Facing increasing wildfire risks in Southern California, the Santa Margarita Water District is using advanced geographic information system (GIS) data to strengthen fire readiness and water resilience across its service area.
GIS technology enables the District to strategically manage critical resources, including billions of gallons of stored water, thousands of fire hydrants, and emergency drinking water supplies that support more than 210,000 residents. This data-driven approach is especially important in a region that relies heavily on imported water from sources like Northern California and the Colorado River.
During major incidents such as the Airport Fire, GIS mapping tools-powered by ArcGIS-provided real-time visibility into fire spread and infrastructure locations. This allowed teams to coordinate effectively and deliver hundreds of thousands of gallons of water to support firefighting efforts.
Beyond emergency response, GIS supports long-term planning by helping the District anticipate future fire flow demands, guide infrastructure investments, and proactively monitor pipelines and hydrants. As the community grows, this technology plays a key role in helping SMWD maintain reliable, high-quality water service while strengthening preparedness for future wildfire events.
