Remember: Safe sparks make bright celebrations, Redbirds!

July marks an especially meaningful Independence Day as the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. With celebrations expected to be larger and more frequent, this time brings increased use of fireworks, outdoor gatherings, and travel. While these traditions bring communities together, they also highlight the importance of staying mindful of safety during summer activities.

As summer continues, consider these key preparedness actions for July:

Practice fireworks safety

Fireworks can cause serious injuries and fires. The safest way to enjoy them is to attend a public display conducted by trained professionals. If you are around fireworks, follow safety instructions, keep a safe distance, and never allow children to handle or light them. Keep water nearby in case of fire or malfunction.

Prevent fires during outdoor activities

Dry conditions, grills, and open flames can increase fire risk during the summer months. Use grills only in designated areas, keep flammable materials at a safe distance, and fully extinguish any flames before leaving the area. Dispose of smoking materials properly and report any fire hazards you observe.

Stay aware of summer weather

July often brings thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall. Continue to monitor weather conditions, especially during outdoor gatherings or travel. Move indoors during storms and remain cautious of localized flooding after heavy rain.

Prepare for heat and peak summer conditions

High temperatures and humidity can increase the risk of heat-related illness. Stay hydrated, take breaks in cooler environments, and plan outdoor activities for earlier or later in the day when possible.

Safe celebrations start with simple, thoughtful choices. Taking a few steps now helps ensure holidays and gatherings remain enjoyable for everyone.
