The College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences has recognized Dr. Emily S. Bailey, associate professor of Public Health, with the 2026 Dean's Award for Excellence, honoring her outstanding achievements in research, teaching, service and student mentorship.

Presented annually by CPHS Dean, Dr. Jeff Mercer, the award recognizes a faculty member whose work exemplifies the mission and values of the College while making a significant impact on students, scholarship and the broader community.

An environmental microbiologist and One Health scholar, Dr. Bailey has established a nationally recognized research program focused on environmental health, infectious diseases and public health surveillance. Her scholarship includes 58 peer-reviewed publications spanning environmental microbiology, zoonotic diseases, water and wastewater systems, SARS-CoV-2 persistence, and antimicrobial resistance.

In 2026, Bailey received national recognition through an invited News & Views article in the journal Nature Water, further highlighting her growing influence in environmental health research.

"Dr. Bailey exemplifies the highest standards of excellence in the College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences and brings distinction to Campbell University through scholarship that is both nationally recognized and student-centered," Mercer said. "Her ability to create meaningful opportunities for students makes her exceptionally deserving of this honor."

Dr. Bailey's research has been supported through funding from organizations including the World Health Organization, the U.S. Department of State's Biological Engagement Program and other national and state agencies. She has secured more than $350,000 in external funding as a principal investigator or co-investigator, supporting projects focused on environmental surveillance, pathogen monitoring, water quality and food safety.

A hallmark of Dr. Bailey's work is her commitment to involving students in every stage of the research process. Through laboratory experiences, capstone projects and independent studies, students gain hands-on experience with environmental sampling, molecular detection methods and quantitative microbial risk assessment while contributing to publications and applied research initiatives.

Her collaborations with Johnston County and the North Carolina Food & Lodging program have provided students with opportunities to evaluate mobile food unit safety practices and help inform local and state public health policies.

Beyond her research accomplishments, Dr. Bailey has played a key role in strengthening the College's culture of scholarship. She serves as chair of the CPHS Research Committee, leads First Friday research forums, and contributes to numerous College and University initiatives that support faculty and student research.

"Dr. Bailey has achieved national visibility for her research while preserving and enhancing educational opportunities for students," Mercer said. "Her leadership in scholarship and unyielding commitment to student success are making a lasting impact on our College and the communities we serve."

For her exceptional integration of research, teaching and service, Bailey was selected as the recipient of the 2026 Dean's Award for Excellence.
