How Forsyth County Is Shaping Business-Focused Growth

When Jennifer Mihalcoe talks about economic development, her enthusiasm is unmistakable.

"I kind of geek out on it, I really do," she said. "When you work with a business from the ground up, it starts as just a concept, an idea. By the end, the business owner feels relieved. All that pressure and anxiety, they're gone. I love watching that transformation."

Mihalcoe joined Forsyth County as economic development manager in August 2025, bringing more than a decade of experience in business recruitment, expansion and incentives. She says no two days look the same in her role, and that's exactly what she enjoys.

"Every day is different, but my core responsibilities remain the same: recruiting new businesses and supporting existing ones as they grow," she said. "My goal is to streamline internal processes so businesses can move from concept to opening their doors as quickly as possible."

She understands that navigating local government processes can feel overwhelming, especially for new business owners. Many are experts in their specific craft, whether it's preparing exceptional food or manufacturing specialized equipment, and may not be familiar with "governmentese."

That's where Mihalcoe plays a critical role.

"I serve as a liaison for between the business community and County staff as a single point of contact," she explained. If a business owner isn't sure which department to call, they can come to me. I help connect the dots and find solutions."

Mihalcoe's work is guided by a five-year strategic plan focused on key industries including life and biosciences, advanced manufacturing, technology and IT, professional services and headquarters. These sectors reflect both the community's needs and its long-term economic goals.

"Bringing jobs to Forsyth County residents is huge," Mihalcoe said. "It will take some of the tax burden off of residents, reduce commuter rates, and create opportunities locally, improving the quality of life in the process. It's incredibly exciting. There's a real sense of momentum around economic development here."

Mihalcoe attributes the County' success in attracting business to a combination of strong advantages: a low tax base, excellent schools, outstanding parks and natural resources, and a high quality of life. Its proximity to Atlanta and the inland port in Hall County further strengthens its appeal.

While these assets speak for themselves, she emphasizes the importance of collaboration. Partnerships with the Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce, the Development Authority, the State of Georgia and the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners help foster a coordinated, business-friendly environment.

"The Board of Commissioners plays a key role in guiding our efforts," she said. "Their support makes my work possible. They're incredibly pro-business, supporting everything from small startups to large corporations."

Justin Hammond, Director of Operations for Valve Solutions, LLC (VSI), experienced that coordination firsthand when he worked with Forsyth County and Mihalcoe to open a business in the county.

"Our experience was extremely positive," Hammond said. "From the beginning, Jennifer and the County were accessible, responsive and genuinely interested in understanding our business-not just what we needed immediately, but what we were trying to build long-term."

He added that the County's approach stood out.

"What stood out most was the level of coordination," he said. "Instead of us having to contact multiple departments individually, Forsyth County acted as a central point of communication. We weren't handed off; the Economic Development team stayed involved and helped guide us through each step."

For Mihalcoe, the future of Forsyth County is bright.

"I remember thinking, 'I can really make a difference in a community like this.' I'm excited see how it continues to grow and evolve," she said.
