Dakota State Introduces Online Data Privacy Master’s Degree

December 11, 2025

Dakota State University is launching a Master of Science in Data Privacy (MSDP) created through a deliberate, interdisciplinary collaboration among three colleges: The Beacom College of Computer & Cyber Sciences, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the College of Business and Information Systems. This cross-college partnership ensures the program integrates technical, ethical, legal, and organizational perspectives, preparing graduates to address complex data privacy challenges from multiple dimensions in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

"With our nationally recognized strength in cybersecurity, the new Master of Science in Data Privacy is a natural complement to our academic portfolio, preparing graduates to protect sensitive data not only from breaches, but through the everyday decisions organizations make about the data they collect, why they collect it, and how it's used," said Dr. Rebecca Hoey, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs.

Developed with flexibility in mind, the full online program supports both traditional students and working professionals. It is well-suited for individuals in business, law, cybersecurity, healthcare, and government who seek advanced preparation in data protection and privacy management while balancing academic, professional, and personal commitments.

Aligned with South Dakota's priorities for workforce growth and technology-driven innovation, the MSDP reinforces DSU's leadership in cyber-related education. As organizations adopt artificial intelligence, expand digital operations, and face heightened regulatory expectations, demand for trained privacy professionals continues to rise.

"This program positions DSU to lead in a fast-growing field by producing professionals who help organizations reduce risk and prevent harm to their customers, operating responsibly in a data-driven world," said Hoey.

The new program equips graduates with the knowledge and skills needed to guide responsible data practices and strengthen organizational resilience in a data-centric world.
