BUDGET AMENDMENT NO. 5 ALLOCATES $6.2M FROM UNASSIGNED FUND BALANCE TO KEY PROJECTS AND INITIATIVES

(Charleston, W. Va.) - During this evening's Charleston City Council meeting, City Council approved General Fund Budget Amendment No. 5 which allocates $6.2M from the Unassigned Fund Balance for key projects -including several that were outlined in Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin's 2025 State of the City address.

"With the funding that has been allocated and approved this evening, we can get started on several projects outlined in my State of the City address-including Hearts of our Neighborhoods, the pilot expansion of Charleston Urban Works into the Kanawha City Area, improvements to Danner Meadow Park, and working toward reimagining the Municipal Auditorium," said Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin. "In addition, this budget amendment also ensures our firefighters are better prepared with a second set of fire gear, our street department can continue to respond to winter storms, and folks have a place to go during extreme temperatures."

Budget Amendment No. 5 allocates funds from the Unassigned Fund Balance to the following projects:

  • $180k to continue partnership with Arts Amplified, support City Center Live
  • $250k to expand use of security cameras at P&R facilities and parks
  • $350k to construct a CFD training center at Station 8
  • $1.75M to repair Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center Parking Garages
  • $600k to continue Charleston Land Reuse Agency programs and operations
  • $300k to make improvements to Danner Meadow Park
  • $250 to issue a 2nd set of bunker (fire) gear to CFD members
  • $250k to establish the Hearts of Our Neighborhoods program
  • $1M to establish the Municipal Auditorium Project Fund
  • $700k for architectural, engineering, and design services for the Public Safety Center
  • $100 to Municipal Beautification for city-wide beautification efforts
  • $286k to replenish road salt inventory
  • $25k to upgrade Council Chambers
  • $75k to expand Charleston Urban Works to Kanawha City as part of a pilot program
  • $50k to fund warming and cooling centers
