Bridge Beam Setting to Begin for New Flyover Ramps on the I-285/I-20 West Interchange Project
ATLANTA, GA - The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) announces an upcoming construction milestone for the I-285/I-20 West Interchange project. Crews will begin installing the first bridge beams for the new flyover ramps in the center of the interchange, marking a significant step forward in the project's progress.

Initially, beam installation within the center of the interchange will occur during the day with minimal anticipated traffic impacts, beginning the week of February 23, 2026.

Coming up in March and continuing throughout 2026, motorists may experience temporary overnight traffic pacing on I-20 eastbound/westbound between Fulton Industrial Boulevard and Hamilton E Holmes Drive and I-285 northbound/southbound. These pacing operations are required to safely set beams over travel lanes for the new system-to-system connections. Specific dates and timeframes will be announced in the weekly traffic impact report to help drivers plan accordingly.

With construction of the bridge foundations and bents, the substructure of the bridge, nearing completion, beam setting signifies the first step in the construction of the flyover's superstructure and some of the most visible structural progress.

"We're just under a year into heavy construction on this key project that impacts the movement of passenger and freight vehicles throughout the entire region," said Georgia DOT Project Manager Donald Stull. "Moving into highly visible work and the new interchange taking shape is exciting, and we look forward to rolling out elements of the project as they're completed."

Georgia DOT reminds all drivers traveling through the interchange area to:
  • Use caution in construction zones
  • Observe reduced speed limits
  • Follow posted signage and guidance from crews
  • Plan for extra travel time, especially during overnight pacing activities later this spring
