Gatorade wants you to rethink hydration. Here's why it matters.

Hydration plays a critical role in how people think, feel, and perform far beyond sports. Drawing on decades of science, Gatorade is expanding how it helps more people meet their day-to-day hydration needs.

Most Americans know hydration matters. But many don't realize just how often they're actually dehydrated - or what to do about it.

This isn't just an issue for elite athletes. It affects anybody hitting the gym, navigating a busy work schedule, traveling the world, or just getting through their day. That's why Gatorade is entering a new era for the iconic brand - applying its 60 years of research studying hydration's effects on performance, to help more people better understand and meet their hydration needs across a wider range of everyday moments.

The shift comes at a time when hydration is top of mind for many consumers - but it still remains widely misunderstood, despite being one of the most important factors in overall health. While 95 percent of Americans know that staying hydrated is important, more than 150 million people still report feeling the effects of dehydration1 every single week.

The hidden toll of dehydration

A little more than half of your body weight is made up of water. That H2O helps move oxygen and nutrients to your muscles, keeps blood volume stable, removes waste and controls your body temperature. If those fluids aren't replaced, that's when dehydration starts to build.

Key signs of dehydration can include fatigue, headaches, weakness and light-headedness. It can also affect cognitive skills like memory, attention, reasoning, and decision-making. And it doesn't just happen after intense exercise. Research shows that even a 1% drop in body mass from fluid loss - roughly equivalent to losing 1.5 pounds (0.7 kg) of water for a 150-pound person - can impact how well we think and feel. That's easily possible after a few hours without fluids or a long walk in the sun.

"While many people are familiar with the more classic signs of dehydration, they might not realize that hydration supports how the body functions, including temperature regulation, nutrient delivery, joint lubrication, energy, and cognitive focus," said Lindsay Baker, Director at the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI). "As a result, dehydration can affect everyday life in ways far beyond thirst. At GSSI, we've spent decades conducting research to help people understand what their bodies need, from game day to the everyday moments that impact health and performance."

Dehydration isn't just about losing water - it's also about losing important electrolytes, like sodium and potassium, that help your body absorb and retain fluids. And while thirst seems like a helpful guide, it actually kicks in after dehydration has already started. Your body triggers those cues when your blood volume drops, and salt and other particles in the blood become more concentrated. Both of those happen because your body is already feeling the effects of dehydration - all the more reason to stay attuned to your body's hydration needs.

As more hydration products hit store shelves, with conflicting claims and confusing cues, Gatorade is responding by putting education and clarity front and center for consumers. With a refreshed visual identity and new products designed for more everyday occasions, the brand is focused on making hydration science clearer, more accessible, and easier to navigate.

As part of this broader push, Gatorade is adding clearer benefit messaging on packaging via the new Gatorade Advanced Hydration System - aimed at helping consumers choose the right product for their needs, whether that's hydrating better, faster, or longer than water.

Expanding hydration for more occasions

The brand is also innovating to serve a wider range of occasions and intensities: this includes Gatorlyte Longer Lasting, which boasts three times more electrolytes than Gatorade Thirst Quencher. Scheduled to start rolling out this year, with a national launch in 2027, Gatorlyte Longer Lasting is designed to help the body stay hydrated longer than water alone - which can be important for moments when maintaining hydration really matters, such as long travel days, demanding work shifts (workers in outdoor, high-intensity roles can sweat over a liter an hour, if not more), and sustained physical activity.

This evolution also includes changes to meet modern-day consumer preferences. Gatorade Lower Sugar, which is already on store shelves, contains no artificial flavors, sweeteners, or colors, and 75% less sugar than Gatorade Thirst Quencher. And beginning this year, the brand is also starting the process of shifting its products away from artificial colors. Later this spring, the brand's full powder stick lineup will transition to clear. And in the fall, three of its top ready-to-drink flavors - Fruit Punch, Lemon Lime and Orange - will all be free of artificial dyes, instead using colors from fruits and vegetables to get their signature hues.

It's a new era that broadens where Gatorade shows up for consumers - expanding its range while staying true to its roots in hydration science.
