Independence, Mo.
- The National Park Service has selected James Raftery as the next superintendent of Harry S Truman National Historic Site. He will assume the role on September 20, 2026.

"James brings a strong record of leadership, collaboration, and commitment to preserving our nation's heritage. We look forward to the vision and energy he will bring to the site as he works with staff, partners, and the community to honor President Truman's legacy," said Acting Deputy Regional Director Pete Swisher.

Raftery comes to Harry S Truman National Historic Site from Steamtown National Historic Site in Pennsylvania where he was the Chief of Railroad Operations. Previously, he served as Deputy Chief of Maintenance at Morristown and Thomas Edison National Historic Sites. His career with the National Park Service began as a preservationist at Valley Forge and Hopewell Furnace National Historic Sites. Before joining NPS, he worked as a general contractor for twenty years.

"I am honored to join the team at Harry S Truman," said Superintendent James Raftery. "This park tells an essential story about President Truman and the values that shaped his life, and I look forward to supporting the dedicated staff and community who care so deeply about this place."

In his personal time, Raftery enjoys fishing and woodworking. He enjoys traveling with his wife, Becci, and they hope to eventually visit every national park site.
