Washington Park Opens in Historic Washington District

West Sacramento city leaders, project partners, and community members gathered today to celebrate the grand opening of Washington Park, the first park in the Washington District and the 40th park in the City of West Sacramento's park system.

The new neighborhood park marks a significant milestone in the City's ongoing efforts to expand access to parks, strengthen neighborhood connectivity, and support economic development through strategic public-private partnerships. Located at 420 6th Street, Washington Park was developed as part of the Four40 West housing project in partnership with BlackPine Communities.

The approximately one-half-acre park provides flexible lawn space, shade structures, picnic areas, and a children's play area while preserving the site's existing Heritage Oak trees. The park also features a prominent public art installation created by Yolo County artist Roger Berry, located at the main entrance to serve as a welcoming landmark and wayfinding beacon for residents and visitors traveling by foot, bicycle, or automobile.

"Recreational amenities serve as a significant ongoing driver of economic growth," said Traci Michel, Director of Economic Development & Housing. "They help attract new residents, increase property values, improve the health and wellbeing of residents and employees who call West Sacramento their work home. This park also supports the surrounding business community by encouraging residents and visitors to explore and patronize local spots and amenities nearby."

Washington Park fills a long-standing gap in recreational access within the Washington District. Prior to its construction, the nearest playgrounds were located more than a mile away and separated from many residents by high-traffic roadways and other barriers. The new park provides families with safe, walkable access to recreational amenities and gathering spaces close to home.

"As the first park in the Washington District and the 40th park in our citywide system, Washington Park marks an important milestone for our community," said Mayor Martha Guerrero. "This reflects the City's continued investment in parks as essential public infrastructure that help shape how our neighborhoods grow and function. By investing in parks alongside housing, transportation, and economic development, we are building complete neighborhoods that support long-term community wellbeing and ensure West Sacramento remains a vibrant place to live for generations to come."

City officials emphasized that Washington Park expands access to safe, walkable neighborhood recreation and provides an important new public space designed to serve residents of all ages in the Washington District.

"We're proud to open a space that reflects our commitment to investing in the people and neighborhoods that make West Sacramento such a vibrant community, said Parks & Recreation Director Kate Smith. "At Parks & Recreation, our work is guided by the values of community, innovation, and health and well-being. Parks are among the most visible and impactful investments a city can make. They provide places for recreation, exercise, relaxation, and connection."

Following remarks, City officials, project partners, and community members participated in a ceremonial ribbon-cutting and toured the completed park, including its recreational amenities, preserved heritage oak trees, and public art installation.

Washington Park helps kick off an exciting series of upcoming park openings and groundbreakings throughout the city for at least the next six months.
