eNews Faculty and Staff Spotlight highlights employees who are making a difference on our campus every day and helping to change the lives of our students. This edition of eNews features Lacey Shillingburg '11/M'14.

Position and Department:

Administrative Assistant for the Student Government Association in the Department of Student Engagement

How long have you worked at FSU?

I began my career at FSU as a student worker and part-time contractual employee before transitioning to a full-time, regular position in October 2012.

What 3 words can you use to describe FSU?

Close-knit. Scenic. Supportive.

List any professional or personal accomplishments we can celebrate with you.

While I've been honored with several awards and accolades, what means the most to me is hearing from students that they felt supported and made meaningful progress during our time together.

What is your favorite thing about working at Frostburg State University?

My favorite thing about working at Frostburg State University is the people. I love watching students grow as leaders, celebrating their accomplishments and being there to support them when they need a helping hand.

Is there a faculty and/or staff member that you consider a mentor? If so, who and why?

I have been fortunate to have had several mentors. While it is difficult to single out only a few, Cindy Troutman stands out as a valued mentor to me and many colleagues across the university. Both she and Gail Lutton have generously shared guidance and wisdom gained from years of experience. Additionally, Dr. Sara-Beth Bittinger '00/D'17 has been a true catch-all -- a trusted person to turn to when you don't know where to start. More recently, Patrick O'Brien challenged me to think outside the box, while Robert Cooper exemplifies selflessness, always willing to offer guidance and support.

What advice would you give to current students?

Enjoy the college experience - you're only young once. Take advantage of the flexibility you have during this time. Academically, develop meaningful professional relationships, while gaining practical experience in your area of interest. Personally, college is also about discovering who you are and what you're capable of. Step outside your comfort zone, meet new people and get involved.

What is a cause near and dear to your heart and why?

Causes near and dear to my heart include mental health awareness, supporting those impacted by Alzheimer's and dementia and environmental conservation. My grandmother had Alzheimer's, so that cause is especially personal to me. I also care about protecting the environment. As someone who loves getting lost in nature, I want to do my part to help protect the beauty of our world for future generations.

What do you do for fun?

Aside from spending time with my wonderful husband and daughter, I enjoy hiking and traveling - particularly to destinations where I can combine the two. In my downtime, I enjoy watching the NFL and keeping up with the trending TV shows. Go Ravens!
