In a discussion with members of the American Chamber of Commerce in Lithuania, Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas outlined the Government's priorities for improving country's business climate. Reducing bureaucracy and ensuring high-level attention to investment conditions are commitments the Government embraced from day one-commitments that, as the Prime Minister emphasized, will remain central in the future.
"With its many competitive advantages, Lithuania is well-positioned to attract investment. After taking the first successful step, we must not stumble on the second: businesses should not be left to navigate a maze of bureaucracy, and strategically significant investment projects require must have all the attention at the highest level. This Government does not view business challenges as foreign or irrelevant but as shared in our pursuit of greater national prosperity and sustainable business growth. Lithuania-US business ties are particularly important, as they form one of the pillars of our strong bilateral partnership," said Prime Minister Paluckas.
Tackling bureaucratic inertia-which affects both businesses and citizens-is among Government's core objectives. To that end, the Government has set up a commission to free business from red tape. And ministries are now working to identify regulatory burdens in specific sectors.
The Government's ambitions extend beyond addressing overly restrictive and irrational regulations; it also seeks to shift institutional mindsets, often driven by a fear of risk and accountability, Prime Minister Paluckas noted.
Taking questions from the attendees on various themes of relevance to the business community, the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of increasing access to capital, with a greater role envisioned for the national development bank ILTE. He also underscored the importance of investing in education, supporting high value-added sectors, tapping into the economic potential of the Baltic region, and fostering closer cooperation between countries.
Security, another key priority for the Government, was addressed during the meeting, with an emphasis on increased defence funding.
As noted by the Prime Minister, the Government is committed to digital transformation-one that brings practical, everyday benefits to citizens and businesses alike. This includes improving the efficiency of public services, enhancing their accessibility, and making them more user-friendly. To drive these efforts forward, the Government set up a Digital Transformation Commission last week.
