U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Illinois State Director Jesus Ortega announced that the agency provided the Illinois Valley Food Pantry in Peru, Illinois, with $550,000 in funding. The food pantry serves nine rural communities in LaSalle County, serving on average 750 families a month experiencing food insecurity.
"Under the leadership of President Trump and Secretary Rollins, USDA Rural Development is committed to supporting our rural communities," said Ortega. "As the need for the food pantry continues to grow in LaSalle County, this equipment will ensure the staff and volunteers are better able to serve their community members. This Rural Development investment will support the pantry in providing fresh and frozen food to families and individuals in need."
USDA funding will help the food pantry purchase new equipment that will replace old, inefficient equipment. The new equipment purchases include a new walk-in freezer unit, HVAC system, refrigerated box truck, food delivery cargo van, facility improvements, and a generator.
Through USDA's Community Facilities program , the agency offers direct loans, loan guarantees, and grants for public service buildings to improve the quality of life, develop and sustain rural America. USDA's financial support enhances the competitiveness of our rural communities to attract and retain businesses that provide employment and services for residents.
