Lane Closures Ahead as DOTI Constructs Improvements

Lane Closures Ahead as DOTI Constructs Improvements

Published on January 20, 2026

DENVER - Denver's Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) would like the public to be aware of upcoming lane closures supporting two projects that will make walking, biking, and accessing transit safer and easier in South Denver.

Closure of on-ramp to Santa Fe NB from Evans for New Pedestrian Bridge

Starting tomorrow night, Wednesday, January 21, and lasting for up to 12 weeks, DOTI, in coordination with CDOT, will close the on-ramp to northbound Santa Fe Drive at Evans Avenue. Detour routes will be posted and are shown on the attached map. The closure of the northbound on-ramp to Santa Fe Drive at Evans is required to accommodate construction of a pier that will support a new bicycle and pedestrian bridge being built at West Jewell Ave.

The new pedestrian bridge at Jewell Ave. will provide people a safe way to cross over Santa Fe Dr. and freight and RTD rail lines and a more comfortable alternative to using Evans Avenue, which is a busy corridor for cars. When completed, the 370-foot, 30-foot-high, and 12-foot-wide structure will connect neighborhoods east and west of Santa Fe Dr. and provide a new and convenient way to access the Evans Ave. RTD light rail station.

Stretch of Iowa Avenue Closes for Underpass Improvements

Next week, DOTI will begin making improvements to an underpass along Iowa Avenue east of Santa Fe Drive to make travel better for pedestrians and bicyclists. The project will reconstruct the existing sidewalk along the north side of the underpass, replacing the existing stairs with ramps, enhancing multimodal safety and connectivity between adjacent neighborhoods, providing ADA access, and making travel more comfortable. New lighting along the pathway is also planned, along with public art.

To ensure safety during demolition and reconstruction of the sidewalk, DOTI will need to fully close Iowa Avenue to cars in both directions between Acoma Street and Santa Fe Drive starting Monday, January 26, for about nine (9) months. Access will be maintained in the underpass for pedestrians and people who bike.

For both projects, alternate routes to Santa Fe northbound for drivers are Mississippi Avenue to the north and Dartmouth and Hampden avenues to the south.
