U.S. Department of Education Awards Over $153 Million in American History and Civics Seminars Grants

September 29, 2025

The U.S. Department of Education (the Department) today announced over $153 million in new grant awards through the American History and Civics Seminars Program. Grants are largely being awarded to institutions of higher education with independent civics centers and non-profit organizations focused on American History and civics education. This record investment underscores the Trump Administration's commitment to strengthening civics education nationwide.

"These grants reflect the Trump Administration's ongoing efforts to educate and inspire youth toward informed and patriotic citizenship in the lead-up to America's 250th birthday," said Under Secretary Nicholas Kent. "We are focused on restoring civics education and advancing a shared understanding of America's founding principles and rich history in schools across the Nation. To know this great country is to love and cherish it."

Grant Award Highlights:

  • Seminars for America's Semiquincentennial: The Department made awards to civics institutes at higher education institutions that will conduct expert-led seminars around the country, some of which will be held in partnership with local school districts. The seminars will focus on primary documents, constitutional study, historical field experiences, civil discourse, and American achievement.
  • Civics Literacy Initiatives: The Department awarded grants to programs focused on strengthening history and civics instruction in K-12 classrooms. One representative project will develop a statewide, open-access Civics Literacy Teaching Toolkit containing recorded seminar content, founding documents, classroom-ready instructional strategy briefs, and exemplary student civics engagement projects.

Grant Funding will Support:

  • Seminar-based instruction grounded in founding texts and constitutional principles;
  • The creation of short- and long-form educational resources to enhance civics learning for students and the broader public;
  • School and community events fostering civil discourse on public issues related to foundational American principles; and
  • Locally developed curricular resources that meet state academic content standards.
