Required ethics training is an essential part of building public trust by creating and supporting a culture of ethics in City government. Through the provision of regular ethics training and advice, Board of Ethics general counsel staff members strive to ensure that public servants are (1) protected from undue influence and (2) acting in the public's interest.
Per Board of Ethics Regulation No. 7, all City officers and employees must fulfill both of the following general ethics training requirements throughout their time with the City:
This year, employees in the 2026 training cohort (for example, people who started in 2006, 2011, 2016 and 2021) must attend a General Ethics training session during the 2026 calendar year (even if they attended ethics training before within the past 5 years). If you have a question about your ethics training obligations, please reach out to Board of Ethics staff at [email protected].
General ethics trainings last about one hour and cover several topics including conflicts of interest, City contracts, representation, gifts/gratuities, political activity, financial disclosure forms, and post-employment rules. Trainers do not provide a copy of the presentation following the training, but a comprehensive overview of all the covered material can always be found in the Board of Ethics manuals at ethics.pub/manuals.
General Ethics training is available at least three times a month via Zoom and open to all City officers and employees (see 2026 training dates below). Registration is required beforehand and can be completed at ethics.pub/GETraining. Need help navigating the registration form? A stepper guide can be found at ethics.pub/TrainingStepper.
Board of Ethics staff members also regularly provide new hire training as part of the Office of Human Resources' monthly orientation program. Email [email protected] for more information about how to attend.
If you would like to set up a private ethics training for your department/team, please visit ethics.pub/BookEthics to make a request to Board staff. Private ethics trainings can be either virtual or in-person, and are ideal for elected officials, supervisor groups, groups of 20+, or other specialized training needs.
