BLM Prepares to Permit Next Chapter of Trans Alaska Pipeline System, Safeguarding American Energy Security

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Bureau of Land Management is taking a major step today toward securing the future of Alaska's famed Trans Alaska Pipeline System, opening a 15-day scoping period on a proposed 30-year renewal of the system's right-of-way. This begins the environmental review process needed to unlock decades more of safe transport of oil through the 800-mile pipeline, providing American energy and economic security.

This action comes in response to a 30-year right-of-way renewal application from Alyeska Pipeline Service Company, which operates the pipeline on behalf of its three owner companies: Harvest Alaska, LLC; ConocoPhillips Transportation Alaska Inc.; and ExxonMobil Pipeline Company LLC.

The Trans Alaska Pipeline System was first authorized in 1974 and constructed between 1974 and 1977. Since construction, the pipeline has transported over 19 billion barrels of oil from Alaska's North Slope to in-state refineries and the Valdez Marine Terminal. In 2025, the Trans Alaska Pipeline System transported an average of 463,000 billion barrels per day. 

"Nearly 50 years after its construction, the Trans Alaska Pipeline is still an engineering marvel and only growing in its importance to Alaska's economy and global energy markets," said BLM Alaska State Director Kevin Pendergast. "We are acting now to secure the pipeline's future as we work to unlock the energy resources of the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska and the Coastal Plain of Arctic National Wildlife Refuge."

This effort builds on the Department of the Interior's extensive work to unleash Alaska's resource potential under Executive Order 14153 and Secretary's Order 3422, Unleashing Alaska's Extraordinary Resource Potential, and Executive Order 14154, Unleashing American Energy. Actions taken have improved regulatory certainty and streamlined permitting in the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska and the Coastal Plain of Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, resulting in successful lease sales that should yield increased production in the future.
