Bellway picks up six awards for employee engagement

Bellway has received a string of internal communications awards this year after transforming the way it engages with its workforce through the introduction of digital tools.

Pathway, Bellway's employee engagement app and desktop intranet, was officially launched in May 2024 to provide a more effective, efficient and engaging way of communicating with its employees - particularly those in harder-to-reach on-site construction roles.

More than 60 per cent of employees registered for the app within five weeks of the launch - and that figure has now risen to 95 per cent, well above industry benchmarks. Bellway estimates that Pathway has delivered a 10-times return on investment in terms of improved productivity, engagement and risk reduction.

The successful launch and roll-out of Pathway earned Bellway six internal communications awards in 2025.

Last month, Bellway enjoyed a double success at Gallagher's Communications and Digital Experience Awards, being highly commended for Best Channel Strategy, and commended for Best Intranet. The previous evening, Pathway was highly commended in the Best Employee Engagement Strategy in the CorpComms Awards.

This follows the three awards Bellway won at the ICE (Internal Communications and Engagement) Awards in June: Gold for Best Use of Mobile/Apps; Silver for Internal Communications by Sector; and Silver for Best Engagement of a Disparate or Remote Workforce.

Paul Lawler, Group Head of Communications at Bellway, said: "Pathway has completely transformed how we communicate within Bellway, bringing a much richer experience than the restrictive top-down approach we had previously. Fostering a culture of two-way communication and collaboration with employees was one of our main objectives when we began devising Pathway, and the interactive nature of the app has helped us to achieve this.

"Pathway has played a crucial role in driving some of Bellway's key strategic sustainability priorities, such as communicating the company's vision around climate change, creating a hub to support mental health wellbeing, and encouraging staff participation in fundraising events for our chosen national charity Cancer Research UK.

"It has also supported the work Bellway is doing to be an employer of choice by increasing levels of engagement and interaction with employees. This year, 91 per cent of Bellway staff rated Bellway as a 'great place to work' in our annual Employee Engagement Survey.

"The improvements and efficiencies achieved by Pathway have delivered significant benefits to Bellway and its employees, and we are delighted that the project's achievements have received such strong recognition from within the internal communications sector."

Pathway was built in partnership with communications specialists Staffbase. A 12-month testing phase was conducted with 300 employees from a wide cross section of the business before the app was officially launched in May 2024.
