(Washington D.C.)- Following the abrupt cancellation of thousands of federal mental health and substance use disorder grants, Congressman James Moylan joined a bipartisan letter with 99 of his Congressional colleagues demanding that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) immediately restore funding and provide answers regarding the termination of Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) discretionary grants.
Just 48 hours ago, HHS announced the cut of nearly $2 billion in funding for substance use recovery and mental health programs, which included $6 million for programs at the Guam Behavioral Health and Wellness Center. The Trump Administration has since rescinded that order, restoring funding for more than 2,000 SAMHSA grants.
A stern letter signed by 100 Members of Congress including Republicans Brian Fitzpatrick and Robert Bresnahan alongside Democratic leaders such as Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair Suzan DelBene, questioned the Health Department's rationale of the termination of these grants and how the substance abuse and mental health programs "no longer effectuate agency priorities." The letter also referenced the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Reauthorization Act, signed into law by President Trump, which reauthorized many of these programs for five years.
Congressman Moylan thanks President Trump and Health Secretary Kennedy for acting swiftly by restoring these very impactful and important grants. Moylan also praises his fellow Members of Congress for also moving quickly and sharing his concerns.
"These grants are not partisan or political; they are about human beings who are in dire need of care. I will always fight for funding for programs that help the people of Guam and will continue to work with my Congressional colleagues on both sides of the aisle to achieve this goal,"Moylan said.
