International air passengers exceed 11.7 million in July, an increase of 4.3% year-on-year

In terms of the main outbound markets, 2.7 million international passengers came from the United Kingdom and generated 23.1% of the total flow of arrivals to Spain, registering a year-on-year increase of 4%. The Balearic Islands was the main destination for the British, accounting for 27% of passengers, followed by the Canary Islands, with a share of 20.9%. In terms of year-on-year growth rates, Galicia and Andalusia were the ones with the highest growth, above 10%.

In July, 1.6 million passengers (13.4% of the total) flew from Germany, a slight year-on-year decrease of -0.6%. Although the Balearic Islands was the main destination, with a 46.7% share of arrivals, these fell by -3.2%. Catalonia and the Canary Islands were the next communities with the highest passenger arrivals, registering year-on-year variations of -1.0% and 6.1%, respectively.

Italy accounted for 9.8% of the passenger arrivals in July, 1.1 million in total, showing year-on-year growth of 5%, which benefited all regions except Galicia, which saw a slight decline. The Community of Madrid and Catalonia together accounted for 52.2% of arrivals. In terms of year-on-year variations, the Basque Country, Catalonia and the Canary Islands had a notable performance with increases of over 10% compared to the same month during the previous year.

7.4% of the total number of passengers in July came from France. The Balearic Islands and Catalonia accounted for 47% of total arrivals in this market, but it was the Balearic Islands that saw the greatest increase, receiving 18,499 additional international passengers compared to July during the previous year.

Finally, passengers arriving from the Netherlands accounted for 4.9% of the total, representing an increase of 11.1%. They headed mainly to Catalonia and the Valencian Community, with respective shares of around 20.4% and 18.6%. Except for Galicia, all the regions saw improvements, with Andalusia standing out among them.

Autonomous communities of destination

In July, six main autonomous communities (Community of Madrid, Catalonia, Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Andalusia and Valencia) accounted for 97% of total arrivals. All recorded increases, the strongest being in the Valencian Community (8.2%) and the most moderate in the Balearic Islands (1.2%).

In terms of airports, Adolfo Suárez Madrid Barajas airport received the most arrivals in July, with 2.2 million (an increase of 2.5%), followed by Barcelona airport, with around 2 million international passengers (an increase of 4.9%), and Palma airport, with 1.8 million arrivals, which increased slightly by 0.8% year-on-year. The highest year-on-year increase was recorded at Alicante airport, with 8.3% more arrivals than in July during the previous year.
