As part of its comprehensive College to Career initiative, Wayne State is proud to unveil new and updated resources that help students participate in career-engaged learning early and often - and reward them for doing so. Central to this effort is the new Career Ready path within the Get Involved platform.
The new Career Ready path
Inspired by and developed to complement the university's College to Career maps, the Career Ready path in the Get Involved platform exemplifies Wayne State's commitment to accelerating mobility for its students by helping them gain the experience and skills they need to thrive in today's professional landscape.
"The Career Ready path brings the College to Career maps to life. It gets students engaging with the tools, experiences, events, and connections that will propel them to professional success - and rewards them for their efforts," said Dr. Christine Jackson, vice provost for partnerships and workforce. "Together with the maps, the path provides every student with an action plan that makes their career goals tangible, accessible, and achievable."
"We know all students are thinking about the tools they need to build a successful, thriving career in a world where the only constant is change," said Shawn Pewitt, director of Career Services. "The path and newly refreshed maps are the latest additions to a vast set of resources students can use to achieve their professional goals. Our mission in Career Services - and throughout the university - is simple: to support and empower students at every juncture to ensure a seamless transition from college to career."
How it works
Like the maps, the activities within the Career Ready path are divided into three groups: start your journey, build your experience, and launch your career. Each group represents a different phase in students' professional development, composed of activities suited to each. Examples include building a resume, creating a LinkedIn account, exploring career pathways with Steppingblocks, participating in funded undergraduate research, practicing interviews in Big Interview, and more.
To access the new Career Ready path, students should:
Log in to Get Involved.
Click on their profile in the upper right corner.
Select "Paths" from the dropdown menu.
Select "Career Ready" from the path choice menu.
Start completing activities and earning rewards.
Students must submit a certain number of core and elective tasks within Get Involved to complete each group, which each feature a unique reward. Students who have earned rewards will receive a once-monthly email to their Wayne State account with details on how to claim them.
"At this time in higher education, it is essential that we find ways to innovate so that each student has access to at least one high-impact learning experience during their time at Wayne State," said Laurie M. Lauzon Clabo, provost and executive vice president. "These experiences help prepare students to not only participate in the workforce but to lead."
Refreshed College to Career maps
In addition to the path's launch, the College to Career maps have been newly refreshed. These all-in-one guides that connect students' academic choices to career outcomes now feature a more flexible design, new resources and experiences, hyperlinks, and more.
"The revamped maps are a fantastic resource for students, no matter where they are in their academic journey," Vice Provost Jackson said. "Too often, transformational career preparation experiences and resources can seem hidden to students. The maps make it simple and easy to see the wealth of things that exist, both centrally and in each school and college. Ultimately, they help students see where they are, what comes next, and how to access the right resources, all in one place."
No matter what discipline a student is pursuing or where they are in their academic and professional trajectory, the maps make it easy to find and engage in high-impact experiences - such as clinics, symposiums, conferences, mentorships and more - that prepare them for success in the job market or graduate school, early and as often as possible.
"Career readiness doesn't begin in your junior or senior year-it starts on day one, and we have everything you need to help you along the way," Vice Provost Jackson said.
Overall, the Career Ready path and College to Career maps advance Student Success 2.0, Wayne State's commitment to success for every student, by embedding career readiness throughout the student experience and preparing students for life after graduation.
"These outstanding resources ensure every Warrior has what they need to maximize their studies and prepare themselves to secure fulfilling careers. This is the essence of our campus-wide Student Success 2.0 initiative," said Dr. David Strauss, dean of students. "We are delighted to see these efforts come to life - they are a product of tireless, continuous, campus-wide collaboration, and we know they are going to make an impact for our students."
