Heavy winter storms create perfect conditions for outdoor fun, but they can also lead to a rise in emergency room visits from preventable injuries and cold exposure. From frostbite to sledding and ice-skating injuries, many winter-related emergencies can be avoided with a few simple precautions.
Lasanta S. Horana, MD, FACEP, FACEP"Sledding and ice-skating are popular close to home winter activities, but they carry risks when safety is overlooked," shares Lasanta Horana, MD, Vice President, Medical Staff Leadership and Chair of Emergency Services at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton (RWJUH Hamilton), an RWJBarnabas Health facility. "Choose sledding hills free of obstacles and away from roads and always sled feet-first. When ice skating, stick to rinks or ice that has been officially cleared-natural ice can be unpredictable after storms."
Winter Safety Tips to Remember:
Cold temperatures and wind chill can cause frostbite in minutes, especially on exposed skin. Dress in warm, layered clothing, wear insulated gloves and waterproof boots, and take frequent breaks indoors, especially when shoveling snow.
"With preparation and awareness, you and your family can enjoy the winter weather while keeping out of the emergency room," said Dr. Horana.
Snow days should end with a delicious hot beverage like hot cocoa, not hospital visits. Let's work together to keep you and your family safe, warm, and enjoying every snowy moment.
REMEMBER! Call 9-1-1 immediately if you or someone you love are having a serious or life-threatening medical emergency. Do not drive yourself or someone else to the hospital. Call 9-1-1
