PRESS RELEASE BY THE OFFICE OF THE PRINCIPAL PERMANENT SECRETARY Appointment of a Chief AI Officer in the Public Service

Following the announcement made last October by the Principal Permanent Secretary, Mr Tony Sultana, regarding the creation of the new role of Chief AI Officer within the Public Service, and after a competitive selection process, Mr Jonathan Gerada has been appointed to this position.​

Mr Gerada has over twenty years of experience in information technology and related fields, with particular emphasis on digital transformation, emerging technologies, and governance. He joined the Public Service 14 years ago and served as Chief Information Officer for ten years. Throughout his career, he has played a leading role in strategic ICT initiatives as well as in various projects related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data.​​

The Principal Permanent Secretary, Mr Tony Sultana, explained that the role of Chief AI Officer will further strengthen the internal structures of the public administration and serve as a central reference point for all AI-related projects across Government. He added that this appointment reflects the Public Service's ongoing commitment to adopting advanced technologies in a responsible and efficient manner, delivering added value to citizens.
