Absentee Voting abroad: Referendum on the resumption of EU accession negotiations 29 August 2026

Absentee voting abroad concerning the referendum on 29 August 2026 on the resumption of EU accession negotiations started on 27 July 2026.

We remind those voters that would like to cast a vote, but will be abroad on the day of the referendum, to vote in Iceland before leaving the country, if possible, or to contact embassies or honorary consuls in the country the voter is based in to ascertain where and when to vote.

Voters abroad can vote at:

• Icelandic diplomatic missions (except at the Icelandic Permanent Representation to NATO in Brussels).
• General Consulates in Winnipeg, Tórshavn and Nuuk
• Honorary Consuls

Voters must present valid personal identification with their name, ID number (kennitala), and photo, such as a passport, driver's license or ID card.

Please note that voters are responsible for sending the ballot to the municipality in which the voter is registered with legal residence. The ballot can be posted by mail, or it can be handed to someone who the voter entrusts with the task of bringing it to the right location. Up until election day, the election officer is obligated, if the voter so wishes, to post the ballot by mail. This, however, does not guarantee that the ballot will be delivered in time. Therefore, voters must always take into account the estimated delivery time.
