Mosquito spraying to start after second West Nile positive mosquito test

Vector Disease Control International, a private company contracted by the City of Lewisville, has confirmed the city's second positive West Nile Virus mosquito trap for 2026.

The positive sample came from a trap collected in the 900 block of Rachel's Court. This area is one of nine core sites in Lewisville regularly tested for the mosquito-borne virus.

Ground spraying will occur in a half-mile radius of the testing location. Weather permitting spraying is scheduled for Tuesday, July 14, and Wednesday, July 15, beginning at 9 p.m. both nights.

Trucks operated by Vector Disease Control International will conduct the spraying. The insecticide used is registered with the Environmental Protection Agency and poses minimal risk to humans and the environment.

This is the 11th year the City of Lewisville has worked with Vector Disease Control International. The private company has its own certified lab and technicians. By using a private company, the City is able to receive test results faster than if tested by the state.

City crews regularly walk through and visually inspect creeks and drainage channels to look for potential mosquito breeding sites. The city has multiple staff members authorized to apply anti-larval dunks or localized pesticides to curb the mosquito population.

Residents are encouraged to immediately address any standing water issues on their property to help fight mosquito breeding sites. The City offers free mosquito dunks to Lewisville residents. Dunks can be picked up in person at Lewisville City Hall, Permitting Counter, second floor, 151 W. Church Street, during normal business hours. Lewisville City Hall is open Monday-Thursday, 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and 7:30-11:30 a.m. on Friday.

Residents will need to provide proof of residency.

Residents can report any mosquito complaints to Sanitation Supervisor Pedro E. Martinez at 972.219.3776 or email [email protected].
