Supporting the Preservation and Management Strategies for Kathmandu Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site

Established in 2023 by the Government of Nepal, the International Scientific Committee was created in response to the World Heritage Committee's call to strengthen protection of the Kathmandu Valley World Heritage Property, particularly following the extensive damage caused by the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake.

The latest semester meeting was chaired by Ms. Saubhagya Pradhananga , Director-General of the Department of Archaeology, and brought together site managers of Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur Durbar Squares, municipal representatives, and national and international experts.

Ms. Pradhananga reaffirmed Nepal's commitment to address outstanding technical reviews, complete remaining recovery works, revise the Integrated Management Framework and Heritage Impact Assessment procedures, and integrate the core principle of Historic Urban Landscape and value-based conservation into heritage management.

Representatives from municipalities and site managers presented updates of each site, while the International Scientific Committee expert team, comprising international experts in architecture and urban planning, archaeology, and conservation, alongside national experts in archaeology and heritage management. provided feedback on progress made on the 2025 International Scientific Committee recommendations.
