Natural Gas Utilities Invest $1.36 Billion to Help Customers Use Less Energy and Lower Bills

Oct 7, 2026

WASHINGTON - The American Gas Association released the latest Energy Efficiency Programs Report today, detailing the impact of natural gas utility energy efficiency programs and investments during the 2024 program year. Participating utilities invested $1.36 billion and helped customers save more than 331 million therms of energy - equivalent to 33.1 trillion Btu. More than half of all program spending - 56% - went directly to financial incentives that helped customers adopt and implement energy-saving measures.

"Energy efficiency is one of the most immediate and practical ways to deliver value to customers," said Ashley Duckman, Managing Director, Policy & Strategy at the American Gas Association. "In the latest report year, natural gas utility programs helped customers use less energy and directed the majority of program dollars toward incentives that make efficiency upgrades more accessible. These investments lower energy use, ease pressure on household budgets and strengthen the energy system at a time of growing demand."

The survey assessed ratepayer-funded natural gas efficiency and low-income weatherization programs operated by U.S. natural gas utilities and third-party administrators. The findings show that 97% of reported programs have been operating for at least a decade, including 27% that have served customers for 20 years or more. Spending on programs for low-income residential customers increased by $8 million from 2023, serving over 98,000 additional customers. The report also found an 85% increase in industrial-sector energy savings, alongside gains of 8% in the commercial sector and 7% in the low-income sector. Respondents reported nearly $1.39 billion in planned efficiency-program budgets for 2025.
