The Prime Minister Extends Congratulations on Constitution Day of 3 May

Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė has extended her greetings on the occasion of Constitution Day of 3 May. Adopted in 1791, the Constitution of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth - the first written constitution in Europe and the second in the world - became a highly significant political document embodying the ideas of the Enlightenment, and it remains important today to the history and identity of Lithuania and Poland.

On this occasion, the Head of Government also conveyed her congratulations to the Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, as well as to the people of the neighbouring country - an ally and an important strategic partner of Lithuania.

"At the time, the Constitution of 3 May stood out for its progressiveness in Europe and the wider world, while its authors demonstrated great courage in reforming the state in line with the ideas of the Enlightenment. The Constitution not only enshrined the principles of national sovereignty, the rule of law, and the separation of powers, but also broadened citizens' rights and addressed the issue of civic inequality.

Adopted under conditions of external pressure and threats to the state, the document remains an example of responsibility for one's country even today. At the same time, it is a testament to the historical unity of Lithuania and Poland and to the shared commitment of both nations to freedom," the Prime Minister's message reads.
